1990 Saab 900 MANUAL TRANS OVERHAUL 5-SPEED TRANSAXLE Repair Manual. All Saabs with manual transmissions use a 5-speed transaxle. The Identification number is stamped on top of the clutch slave cylinder. The 1st character of the ID number (G) designates manual transaxle. The 3rd character of the ID number (5) designates number of forward gears. The transaxle assembly is a 2-piece unit, containing both transmission and final drive assemblies. It is located underneath the engine. A portion of the transmission case serves as engine oil sump. Transmission and final drive are assembled in rear section of transaxle. Primary gear unit is housed in front section. All forward gears are in constant mesh, while reverse gear is engaged by a sliding gear.
